Adolf Hitler, Large, heavy, Formal Silver Serving Tray from The Berghof
A quite Superb Large Oval serving tray, made from German heavy silver plate over copper, produced by Wellner for Adolf Hitler’s residences.
The tray is a solid oval shape, with a step down form, having a flat top/outer rim, and then a shallow inclined slope leading down to a steep incline and then the tray basin. The base is of heavy thick copper, which dictates that this tray would have been warmed to serve hot food straight from the kitchen.
The tray features a spectacular, very large and finely detailed Adolf Hitler, Spread winged Eagle with wreathed Swastika straddled by the letters A and H, centered to the upper slope. To the reverse is found the stamped ‘Wellner’ makers mark, followed by a small stamping ’120’ indicating the silver content, and then, impressed into the rim edge is the number ‘145669’ indicating the tray’s inventory designation.
This Formal Silver Tray is from the original Formal silverware used before Albert Speer presented Hitler with his very lavish full silver Formal set on the occassion of the Führer’s 50th Birthday on the 20th April 1939.
The Tray would most likely have been ‘in service’ at the Berghof from 1935 through to the ‘end’ in 1945 and used at most if not every gathering when high echelon figures, foreign dignataries, Third Reich officials, and other VIP’s, were visiting Hitler at The Berghof.
Without doubt this is one of those ‘If it could talk’ pieces!
Condition:
The tray displays surface marks and scratches, knife scores, indicating that food/meat, most likely warm, had been cut while on the tray, and a few small ‘dings’, this would also suggest the tray had been used for many years. The base of the tray has some really nice dark patina which spectacularly displays finger prints and smudges deep in the patina, possibly waiting staff at the Berghof? In overall superb condition, and an absolutely beautiful display piece. Incredibly rare serving tray from Hitler’s Mountain residence, The Berghof. A Superb investment piece.
