Deutsche Reichsbahn Silver Handled Butter Knife from Adolf Hitler’s Security Escort Wagon 10 ‘221’
Specially produced for the Deutsche Reichsbahn Sonderzugs, this very rare knife carries designation marks for Hitler’s Führersonderzug , and in particular carriage number ‘221’ which was Hitler’s Security Escort Wagon.
The handle is accentuated with a raised edge to obverse and reverse. The obverse features a fantastic and finely detailed Deutsche Reichsbahn Eagle with wreathed Swastika straddleby the letters D and R all in relief to the bottom of the handle, and to the hilt is the ’90’ stamping for silver plate. To the reverse is found the impressed number ‘221’ indicating the wagon number, again at the hilt. The blade is stainless steel and carries the cartouche stamping ‘W’ for Gustav Wirth of Solingen-Graefrath over Nicht Rostend.
A little information regarding this rare knife:
‘There were three identical Staff wagons, 10 221, 10 222 and 10223. Each wagon had ten compartments, each compartment with two fold down berths to accomodate 20. Wagon 10221 was for AH’s security personnel. The Begleitkommando, (one of the three wagons with berths) accommodated the ten SS-Begleit-Komando men and ten SS-SD men. His close security detail, the Kriminalkommando was composed of professional detectives of the Reichssicherheistsdienst, or RSD the security service which provided protection for high Nazi officials. Its Dienststelle 1 (Agency 1) was assigned to guard the Fuehrer. When the detachment also included a unit from the Begleitkommando (Escort Detachment) it was known as the Fuhrer-Begleit-Kommando. The FBB men could have eaten in the staff dining wagon using that cutlery, but they did have their own pantry with wagon specific tableware, hence ‘221’.’
