£3,499.00

WWII CARL ZEISS 12 X 60 FLAK & RANGE FINDER BINOCULARS

A superb set of WWII 12X60 Flak & Range Finder binoculars by famous German Optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss, this one is complete with a rare, mounted, Zeiss Chevron alignment scope.
The set comes with a bespoke, dark oak wood tripod with brass and aluminium fittings and an antique ball & socket mount.
Binocular serial number: 133757

They have a stamped plate to the upper surface which reads, ‘blc,Rm.-F.12X60 Für Em4mR40’, indicating that these binoculars were for use in conjunction with a rangefinder for directing Flak guns.
These high-quality Zeiss optics were standard issue for German anti-aircraft batteries across all branches of the military during World War II, including the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine.
Hitler’s personal train, the Führersonderzug, was equipped with armoured flatbed cars called Flakwagen, which mounted quadruple 20mm anti-aircraft batteries (Flakvierling), and as the purpose of the Zeiss 12×60 Flak binoculars were specifically designed for anti-aircraft observation, fire control, and rangefinding, these binoculars were most likely used on the train.
This fabulous set has been, painstakingly, stripped down, restored and serviced using all the original parts, including, even, the screws, of which there are many. The bodywork has been rendered to a polished/brushed aluminium finish. The binoculars have been part of one of our contributers collection for many years and are idealy suited to the home conservatory, penthouse apartment, stylish office, especially where a panoramic view is available, country, city, mountain, or lake vista would be perfect.

Condition:
As mentioned, this set has been completey stripped down, the badly worn original paint has been removed and every exterior body part has been cleaned and polished to a brushed aluminium finish, the interior surfaces have been repainted in black flat matt for anti reflection and stray light contamination. The bodywork displays surface marks, scratches and pitting, all commensurate with age and use. The optics, Objective lens, occulars and prisms have been cleaned, refitted and collimated for optimum optical performance, giving sharp, clear vision. eyepiece focus works smoothly and with the left eyepiece distance lever working fine, the right eyepiece displays a fine black targeting reticle. Some minor surface marks to both occulars. There is some loss to the blue coating on the objective lens but this does not affect vision. The colour filters (Farbglaser), which are situated in front of the prisms and operated by a knurled knob on the upper body, has been serviced and is now fully operational (this is usually found inoperable and stuck in one position). The ajustable sun filter, situated inside the Objective lens shade is working fine. The fully adjustable forehead rest mechanism has been completely stripped and cleaned, including the pressure relief springs. Original eyepiece/forehead rest Black and Orange rubbers cleaned and refitted. The rare Carl Zeiss chevron (which has adjustable size and thickness to the chevron) alignment scope works fine, although there is some expected ‘flecking’ to the white chevron. Also included is the original, rare, Benutzer with all it’s fittings and webb strap with sprung attachment fob and leather tab.
The bespoke high quality tripod is in perfect, made from scratch condition, with an antique brass socket and steel ball mount, fitted with an extended lever for moving and positioning the binoculars. The binoculars are attached by an aluminium plate at the top of the mount which slides into the body underside and is locked in place by using the large adjustable knob to the body topside.

A quite superb piece of World War Two German optical excellence, repurposed from it’s original role as an anti aircraft rangefinder, to a centerpiece of the modern home or office. It is still fully operational and can do pretty much everything it was made for around 83 years ago. In fantastic condition and a great investment piece, as these items are becoming highly valued.
